When someone dies, it can be difficult to know what needs to happen first. The most important thing to remember is that, in most circumstances, you have time.
If the death was expected
If the person died at home under medical care, call their doctor, palliative care team or the service named in their care plan. They will guide you through confirmation of the death and the next practical steps.
If the death was unexpected
Call emergency services on 000. Police and paramedics will explain what happens next. An unexpected death may need to be reported to the Coroner.
Contacting a funeral provider
You can contact a funeral provider when you feel ready. They can arrange transfer of the person who died and help with documentation, burial or cremation, and the farewell. You are allowed to ask questions, request itemised pricing and take time before agreeing to arrangements.
What can wait
Flowers, notices, catering and many ceremony details do not need to be decided immediately. Begin with care for the person who died, any cultural or faith needs, and where they will be buried or cremated.
