Planning a farewell

Creating a farewell that feels like them

Ideas for shaping a personal funeral without being bound by convention, from music and place to the people who take part.

A meaningful funeral does not need to be elaborate. Often, the details people remember are the ones that felt most like the person: a familiar song, a story told by an old friend, or a handful of flowers from the garden.

Start with who they were

Think about the places, people and daily rituals that mattered to them. These can offer a gentler starting point than choosing from a list of conventional funeral options.

Invite people to participate

Friends and family might carry the coffin, share a reading, create a playlist, prepare food or bring something small to place beside a photograph. Participation creates connection and can make the day feel held by the community.

Leave room for quiet

Not every moment needs words. A pause, a walk through bushland or a few minutes listening to a treasured piece of music can say a great deal.
